DESPERTAR DEL CAZADOR (score & parts)

Relatively unknown today, Enrique Granados was a successful Spanish pianist, composer and teacher who won acclaim for his various operas and piano solo works. After performing in New York for then President Woodrow Wilson, Granados missed his scheduled boat back to Spain, instead boarding the SS Sussex which was then torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean by German submarines. Bocetos was an incomplete set of piano pieces from 1912, and Despertar del Cazador ('The Awakening of the Hunter') is the first movement of the set. The jolly, rhythmic and distinctly Spanish music features a prominent low solo for the fourth horn.
