Lefebvre studied under Gounod at the Paris Conservatoire where he won the Prix de Rome for his cantata 'Le Jugement de Rome' in 1870. Opera and oratorio were to form a large part of his output in later years but he still found time to write purely instrumental works and returned to the Conservatoire in 1895 as successor to Benjamin Godard in directing the chamber music class. Lefebvre was a great admirer of Felix Mendelssohn and saw himself as a preserver of musical tradition rather than as a musical innovator. Using imagery which would have appealed to his artist father, he preferred "to work in pastels rather than oils".
