DIVERTIMENTO No.2

Being a mixture of European, Mediterranean and African musical styles, the folk music of his native Malta was the inspiration for Charles Camilleri's compositions and his Divertimento No.2 adds a good measure of jazz. It is dedicated to the renowned clarinettist Jack Brymer who wrote the introductory notes. He advises that an extended technique is required to do the piece justice, "....and a broad knowledge of all fields of music,....". He reminds the performer to 'swing' the quavers in the first movement and he has added accents to help interpretation. The second movement ...."sings the Blues,...." and needs careful, soft articulation, rubato and varied vibrato. The third movement seems to be a romp but Brymer advises caution with tempi and keeping something in reserve for the final Presto. His closing remark is "And remember - in this sort of work, you are part of the act of creation."
