Although he had a classical training in piano and composition at the Bavarian State Conservatory, Günter Maier as he was then, supported himself by performing as a jazz pianist and in 1961 he joined the 'Rundfunk (Broadcasting) im American Sektor' or RIAS Dance Orchestra as pianist and deputy conductor, based in West Berlin and broadcasting to both sides of the Berlin Wall. The German actress and chanteuse Hildegard Knef picked Gunter Noris, as he had now become, as the musical director for her first tour in 1966 and five years later he founded the Bundeswehr (German Army) Big Band which made its very successful debut under his baton at the opening of the 1972 Olympic Games and made another international appearance at the 1974 Football World Cup.

Günther Noris has over two thousand compositions and arrangements listed, mostly of the light music and dance genres, and written for anything from solo woodwind/brass/strings to jazz big band and full wind band. The 130 or so bars of 'El Toro' (The Bull) are predictably Spanish in flavour and the piece comes across as march bristling with fanfares.
