F'tes' or 'Festivals' is the second movement of a three-movement 25-minute orchestral suite entitled 'Trois Nocturnes' by the French composer Claude Debussy. Originally scored for strings, three flutes, two oboes, cor anglais, two clarinets, three bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, cymbals, snare drum, two harps and a wordless female chorus. The outside movements are Nuages ('Clouds') and Sir'nes ('Sirens'). The work, which was completed in December 1899, was inspired by a series of impressionist paintings, also entitled 'Nocturnes' by James Abbott McNeill Whistler. 'F'tes' gives the listener a vibrating, atmospheric dancing rhythmic work, accompanied by sudden flashes of light. Maurice Ravel transcribed the complete suite for two pianos.
