Composer’s Note:
“Our English teacher, Charles Hales, introduced us to 16th century English music. As I was experimenting with composition, Richard Edwards's “Where griping grief" must have seemed to me apt as a basis for a piece for oboe and string quartet - I remember that I loved the timbre of Leon Goossens's recording of Mozart's oboe quartet. Abbotsholme was a small school and nobody played the oboe so we gave the piece its first performance, in June 1945, with a violinist taking the oboe part. It wasn't until I was up at Oxford four years later that it was played by an oboist, Tony Danby. in about 1987, at the request of Stefano Ranieri, I added the ad lib double bass part when he conducted it with the Nuova Orchestra da Camera in Perugia and Rome.”

David Lane was born in London in 1928. His compositions consist of a few songs and carols, an orchestral suite based on his incidental music for various undergraduate plays, and this Fantasy on a Theme of Richard Edwards (written in 1944/45). He was a member of the Foreign (later Diplomatic) Service for thirty-six years, serving in Norway, Turkey, Guinea, Trinidad, New York and Rome: he was President of the United Nations Trusteeship Council and British  Ambassador to the Holy See. His later musical researches and activities include, as vice-chairman of the Peter Warlock Society, tracking down - many from manuscripts - all Warlock's compositions involving an orchestra, and facilitating their recording by EM Records.
