After sixteen years service as a Royal Marine bandsman, as flautist and tutor, Peter Wastall took up peripatetic woodwind and brass teaching at schools in East Kent from which he developed an interest in the psychology of music and music education, for which he was awarded an MA. He was an advisor to Boosey & Hawkes for over twenty-five years and it is that firm which continues to publish Wastall's award-winning and widely used series of educational publications including 'First Repertoire Pieces for Alto Saxophone'.

This collection of eighteen pieces is prefaced with 'Practice tips and performance notes' for each piece. They are presented in three progressive sections which contain a mix of pieces written for saxophone and Peter Wastall's transcriptions for saxophone of other works. They offer a next step for students at the end of 'Learn As You Play' and provide attractive repertoire of Grade 3-5 standard. A CD of backing tracks is included alongside the piano accompaniment.
