After sixteen years service as a Royal Marine bandsman, as flautist and tutor, Peter Wastall took up peripatetic woodwind and brass teaching at schools in East Kent from which he developed an interest in the psychology of music and music education, for which he was awarded an MA. He was an advisor to Boosey & Hawkes for over twenty-five years and it is that firm which continues to publish Wastall's award-winning and widely used series of educational publications including 'First Repertoire Pieces' for clarinet.

This collection of twenty-two pieces is prefaced with 'Practice tips and performance notes' for each piece. They are presented in three parts, the first two consisting of fifteen pieces which were chosen by ABRSM for past syllabi for their Grades 3 & 4 exams. The Part 3 pieces are of a similar standard, selected from a wider repertoire. They all offer a next step for students at the end of 'Learn As You Play' and provide attractive repertoire of Grade 3-5 standard. The CD contains recorded piano accompaniments for each piece, and the book gives details of a website where clarinet demonstration tracks are available.
