Until his retirement from professional orchestral playing, Graham Sheen had been principal bassoon of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields for over thirty years. From 1979 to 2014 he was Professor of Bassoon at the Guildhall School of Music, and on top of that, he has found time to produce over fifty published original compositions, arrangements and educational publications, including works for string ensembles, solo strings and four song cycles for soprano, besides music for bassoon solo, accompanied and in ensemble.
By way of introduction to this collection, Graham writes "Five Bagatelles for solo bassoon were written on a European tour in 2011 and were completed in the space of only six days. Following my Five Concert Studies, an extensive and challenging work, I decided to write a much more concise set of characteristic miniatures, each lasting little more than a single page but remaining a whole and structured piece.
