Gordon Lawson was born in 1931 in Lenzie near Glasgow. In 1950 he entered St John's College, Cambridge where he studied with Robin Orr and Patrick Hadley. After two years' National Service he began teaching, first at Ellesmere then at Malvern and finally at Brighton College where he was Director of Music.
He has written several works for oboe, clarinet, piano and organ, but his main output is vocal and choral music. In 1990/91 he was a winner in the Songs of Praise Competition.
Four Short Pieces for oboe were written in 1989, and were the second set of Gordon Lawson's oboe pieces to be published (the first, Three Bagatelles, were published in 1989 by Oecumuse). Arietta is short and simple, employing a quasi canon treatment in the accompaniment. Waltz is in ABA form with a puckish tune as its main theme and a more cantabile idea in the middle section where there is also a considerable amount of modulation. In Spiritual the song 'Deep River', one of the composer's favourites, is

  • Waltz
  • Spiritual
  • Honeysuckle Rag
