Since graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Graham Sheen has played principal bassoon with the English Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of St Martins-in-the-Fields and latterly, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and he has performed and recorded a number of small ensemble, chamber and solo works. Since 1979 he has been Professor of Bassoon at the Guildhall from where many of his past students hold positions in orchestras around the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Graham Sheen has over twenty arrangements and educational pieces published, several of which are included in examination syllabi.

'Going Solo' is intended to fill the gap between music for beginners and the repertoire available to Grades 4 to 5 students and beyond by adapting famous bassoon solos from the orchestral repertoire or transcribing other solo lines for bassoon and piano, drawing on the music of nearly four centuries. Each piece is headed with a short text on its history, form and playing technique so, as Graham Sheen says in his Foreword " 'Going Solo' will help teachers and pupils to achieve a sound technique right from the start, so that they will be able to face a conductor - or an audience - with confidence."
