Despite the interruption to his studies at the Paris Conservatoire by military service during World War I, Jacques Ibert won the coveted Prix de Rome in 1919, at his first attempt. This allowed him to continue his musical studies in Rome where he composed his first opera in 1921. Over the next 32 years he went on to compose more than eighty works covering almost every genre of classical music including some twenty film scores. At the same time Ibert established himself as a conductor and as a sound administrator in the post of Director of the Academie de France at the Villa Medici in Rome.

By not composing in the style of any particular school and following his principle that "all systems are valid", Ibert won the description 'Eclectic' for his style of composition. "All the elements of his musical language bar that of harmony relate closely to the classical tradition" (Alexandra Laederich). 'Histoires' for piano were published in 1922, having been commissioned by Ibert's publisher Alphonse Leduc, and written during his time at the Villa Medici; with later transcriptions for various instruments including 8 of the 10 titles for alto saxophone and piano. Several of them draw inspiration from the composer's travels to Tunisia, Italy and particularly Spain as heard in No.7 'Bajo la Mesa' and they are generally 'impressionistic' in that the title of each piece describes the mood of the music which follows it. "His music can be festive and gay .... lyrical and inspired, or descriptive and ecocative .... often tinged with gentle humour". Alexandra Laederich's description applies very well to the tuneful and contrasting eight pieces which make up 'Histoires' for saxophone and piano.
