IL CONVEGNO (score & parts)

This edition of Amilcare Ponchielli's Il Convegno-Divertimento for Two Clarinets and String Quintet, is based upon the quintet manuscript which is in the R. Bibliteca Palatina, (Parma) Italy. In addition, the original autographs of the score for two clarinets and piano found in the Archivio Storico Ricordi and the orchestral score in the Conservatorio di Musica "Giuseooe Veri" (Milan) were consulted. Although the manuscript for the string quintet version is anonymous, it bears a striking resemblance to the orchestral version's string writing, which is in Poncielli's own hand. The first edition of Il Convegno (clarinets and piano) was published by Fernando Lucca in 1857 after Ponchielli had written to him appealing for its publication.

"I am asking to publish as soon as possible my duet for two clarinets that I sent you a year ago, because I am exceedingly troubled by the though that it should become a victim of the dust and forgotten, this being for me, the greatest displeasure, so that, when a work, also a good one and one, a fruit of loving care, I believe will be bhuried, I rather prefer to rip up."

The several mistakes that have occurred in the various editions have been corrected in this version. These were, for the most part, errors which the engraver, Gino (no last name), made in creating the original plates. The several note errors have been corrected and the articulations are now consistent. In addition, the editors have supplied string parts for measures 72-90, which were missing from the string quintet version. In preparing this edition, both the score and original parts were carefully examined to present an edition, both the score and original parts were carefully examined to present an edition which represents the composer's ideas. The optional second clarinet part for the final Presto is the one contained in the original score and parts.
