Grieg's famous incidental music was written for Henrik Ibsen's play 'Peer Gynt', about mischievous youth Peer and his loves, family and adventures. 'In The Hall of the Mountain King' is one of Grieg's best-known works, although in fact it is supposed to be satirical along with the rest of the play. The music depicts Peer's entrance into the Troll-King's Hall ('Dovregubben') and all the troll courtiers surrounding him.

This arrangement is rather disappointing because the 2nd bassoon part in the orchestral original is an octave lower than the first and is iconic; but it is the first bassoon part that has been used for this quintet version.
