La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) is an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It was first performed in the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in November 1862. The overture is part of the standard orchestral repertoire. The music begins with the famous 'Fate' Motif, the ominous three Es unison in the brass. Many Italian opera singers feel the opera is 'cursed' and brings bad luck, the superstitious Pavarotti avoided the part of Alvaro for this reason. The main theme was used in the two French films 'Jean de Florette' and 'Manon des Sources'.
Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (1813-1901) was an Italian composer well known for his operas. Along with Richard Wagner to be the preeminent opera composer of the 19th century. He dominated the whole Italian opera scene after Bellini,Donizetti and Rossini. Born the son of Carlo Giuseppe Verdi and Luigia Uttini in Le Roncole, a village near Busseto, in the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. His
