LEONARD BERNSTEIN FOR OBOE

Leonard Bernstein has been described as "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history" whose overnight success as stand-in and unrehearsed conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in November 1943 launched his stellar international conducting career which lasted until his death, some 47 years later. But he is better known now for his eclectic composition in a wide range of music types and styles which include 3 symphonies and other orchestral works, ballet, opera, film and theatre scores, vocal, chamber music and musicals. His influences were jazz, theatre music, Jewish traditions and the work of Bernstein's contemporary composers, such as Stravinsky, Milhaud, George Gershwin and Copland, which combine to produce buoyantly rhythmic and plentifully syncopated music which is full of freely written good tunes, evident in his score for the musical 'West Side Story' which was enthusiastically received by critics and public at its premiere in 1957. It remains his most popular work, not least for its fusion of classical and popular styles, and provides 5 of the 11 numbers in this collection.
