Having noticed the difficulty of programming original works written for bass clarinet and piano, whether for recitals, competitions, or exam pieces, I have decided through this first volume to adapt different pieces of various styles and levels. Originally written for instruments with a low range, often the bassoon or cello, these selected pieces 'sound' particularly good on the bass clarinet.
You will find in this collection only the solo parts of these pieces, transposed in B flat and written in treble clef, without the corresponding accompaniments which are nevertheless easy to obtain in shops or libraries. I have attached the greatest importance to respect for the original text. Only a few chords written for a stringed instrument have been adapted, either by an arpeggio or by keeping only the 'best' note of the proposed harmony. For the rest, tonality, punctuation, octaviation and dynamics, everything has been faithfully preserved. A few breaths have been added by me.
In addition to its educational appeal, this collection will be of interest to musicians looking for a rich repertoire of chamber music for bass clarinet and piano from the 19th and 20th centuries. The bassists often playing the Basset Horn, there is also a transcription of Glinka's sonata for Viola and Piano, to compensate a little for the forgetfulness of the great composers for this magnificent instrument. - Vincent Penot
