The Czech piano virtuoso and composer Josef Palenicek gave his first performance at the age of twelve and later studied Music Composition and Law at different universities, graduating from both in 1938. His career as a professional concert pianist had started two years earlier and progressed to 1949, when he became solo pianist with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and beyond. Palenicek contributed to music education as Professor at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Chamber and concertant music account for over half his catalogue of twenty-five works, and he wrote for clarinet in a number of those. The quickly rising patterns of the first movement of his 'Mala Suita' (Little Suite) establish a mood of brightness and optimism despite a darker middle section; and that sense of inward looking prevails in the second movement which gradually accelerates to a passionate outburst before subsiding to its earlier introspection. The third movement is almost demonic in the energy of its rapid chromatic writing and the toccata playing alternates between the clarinet and the piano. There are solo piano passages in all three movements, perhaps to be expected in a composition by an acclaimed concert pianist.
  • Allegro con brio
  • Andante rapsodico
  • Toccata
