MAMBO MERENGUE

Since graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music as a prizewinning student of composition in 1986, Robin Grant has been active in various types of composition including works for orchestra and chamber ensembles, choral works, opera, music for some fifty stage productions and writing instrumental pieces for students. Some of these have been included in exam syllabi around the world. The presentation of the Bill Warman prize to Robin Grant by Birmingham Conservatoire in 1993 was followed a year later by the Conservatoire's award to him of a post-graduate diploma in composition, with distinction. He then took up a part-time teaching post there and became an honorary member in 1999.
The title piece of this collection of eight pieces owes its name to dance and musical forms whose popularity spread far beyond their countries of origin, from the 1930's - Cuba for the Mambo and the Dominican Republic for the Merengue.
