Modern Standards (2003) is a set of five movements, each of which depicts a different aspect of modern life. In Time After Time this is the modern obsession with time; Giant Steps portrays large corporations, especially the buildings which they inhabit; Time Remembered deals with nostalgia; Caravan depicts traffic; After All is something more spiritual. Each movement, with the exception of the last one, is also derived in some way from a jazz standard.
Modern Standards was first performed on 18 February 2003 by Charlotte Bradburn and Adam Caird at The Banff Centre, Canada.
"This is a fantastic five movement work for Alto/Soprano Sax and Piano, brilliantly written for the medium, with exciting interplay between players. Between the five contrasting movements, many facets of the Saxophone's personality are revealed, from fast driving energy to calmer, more melancholic moments, Modern Standards is set to become a significant work in the saxophone concert repertoire, which will appeal to audiences and players alike. Buy it. And play it!" Rob Buckland - Head of Saxophone Department, Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, UK
