The Moldavian Suite was written down from memory by Mihai Scarlat, a bassist living in the Netherlands, but who originally comes from Moldavia (a country that used to be part of Rumania, but is now an independent country). The Suite is a medley of dances from the region where he was born. Scarlet grew up hearing this music as his father used to conduct a big orchestra. By performing frequently in this orchestra, Mihai became familiar with the typical rhythms from the various parts of Rumania. Mihai Scarlat is the leader of the Ensemble Mihai Scarlat, an orchestra consisting of more than twenty musicians, which is based in the province of North-Holland (see: www.ensemblemihaiscarlat.nl).
He describes some dances as follows: “The Batuta is a dance in which the dancers stamp on the ground so hard and fast that the ground “doesn’t even have time to breathe”. This dance is only performed by really well-trained dancers. The Hora Mare is for the elderly. How you are dressed is very important. In some villages this dance is called “the dance for the rich”, as the wealthy members of the community have a chance to show off their exclusive and expensive dress. The Geampara is a dance from the Black Sea region. This area knows many different rhythms and this dance is played in a typical 7/8 time. The Suite opens with a march and a slow intermezzo.”
The Moldavian Suite was composed by Mihai Scarlat for the clarinet on request of the Festival Classique in The Hague for the occasion of the project “Klarinet: VÉT!” in 2011.
