Besides holding an oboe professorship at the Royal College of Music in London, James Brown played second oboe with the English Chamber Orchestra for nearly forty years. This position gave him the opportunity to search for out of print and sometimes unpublished music of the past, mainly for oboe, in libraries, shops and private collections wherever the Orchestra was touring. He arranged or edited several of his finds and published them in three volumes, the two pieces presented here being the third.

César Franck (1822-90) entered the Paris Conservatoire as a piano student at the age of 12, and became Professor of Organ there 60 years later, after a prize-winning career as pianist and organist. His D minor Symphony and Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra are standard pieces of the concert hall and recording repertoire. Franck's 'Mélodie' for oboe and piano comes from a collection of his manuscripts held by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and is published here for the first time.

Paul Rougnon (1846-1934) was awarded degrees in Music Theory, Harmony and Counterpoint by the Paris Conservatoire by the time he was 24 and three years later he was Professor there, teaching theory, counterpoint and fugue until his retirement in 1921. His compositions run to over 300 and include this undated 'Air de Ballet' for oboe and piano, probably from the 1890s and ".... a typical example of the charming salon music of that time."

  • Franck - Melodie
  • Rougnon - Air de Ballet
