The Irish composer John Field (1782-1837) is credited with composing the first piano 'nocturnes', as he called them, although the Italian 'notturno', for various ensembles, had existed from at least the eighteenth century when the term described 'night music' which might be played after 11.00pm, as distinct from the 'serenade' - 'evening music' which was played earlier. The rather loose form of a cantabile melody over an arpeggiated accompaniment was made popular by Chopin who wrote twenty one piano nocturnes including, between 1830 and 1832, the three which make up his Op.9. No.2 is the best known of these and probably his most famous composition. It's 'rounded binary' form AABABA & coda is all contained within thirty six bars. The internationally acclaimed clarinet soloist and teacher, Guy Dangain has transcribed the singing melody from the right hand of the piano score for clarinet, to exploit the instrument's cantabile potential,
