Robert Clérisse was first and foremost a saxophonist and it is music for saxophone which dominates his catalogue of over seventy compositions. He also seems to have been a founding member of the Marcel Mule Saxophone Quartet in 1927 which, by the quality of its performance and the composers who wrote for it, was central to establishing the saxophone quartet in the concert hall and later, in the recording studio. Clérisse himself wrote a number of quartets of which at least six were published. He served in French military bands as a Director of Music between 1946 and 1955 which must account for the number of marches and concert band pieces he wrote.

Perhaps it also explains his preoccupation with music for wind and brass at the expense of strings and solo keyboard compositions. Besides the saxophone there are accompanied solos for flute, clarinet, horn, trombone and tuba, and two for bassoon including 'Notturno' which was published in 1962. It is marked "Andante moderato, alla veneziana" - in Venetian style and, although the time signature of 12/8 is unusual for such a piece, this nocturne seems to be in the style of a barcarolle.
