Now the bells ring for Tilly is an elegy, but one with ostinato upbeat elements. The piece was written for the funeral of the composer's mother in 2011. Two low-register wind instruments (the alto flute and the cor anglais) play sad and plaintive tunes. With its twinkling sound, however, the celesta ensures that the music maintains an overall hopeful and light-hearted balance.
The piece is written for the somewhat exotic combination of alto flute, cor anglais and celesta. When no celesta is available, the part may be played on piano (one octave higher than written). It can also be played on organ using four-foot or even two-foot stops (e.g. celesta or flute family), depending on the organ. The organist should keep the note lengths short, like water drops.
Henk Kox (b.1951) is a Dutch composer and arranger. He has studied composition with Klaas ten Holt, Jurjen van Geenen and Kees van den Bergh. Recent compositions include Andromeda Passing for soprano and small mixed chamber ensemb
