The son and grandson of conductors with the same first name, Eugene Goossens (iii) was also the brother of the renowned oboist, Leon Goossens. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London and started his career as a violinist in Thomas Beecham's Queen's Hall Orchestra, rising to Beecham's assistant conductor in 1916. Goossens went on to found and conduct his own orchestra with which he gave the British premiere of Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring' in 1921. Between 1923 and 1947 he conducted various orchestras in the USA, including the Cincinatti Symphony and then moved to Australia as conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Director of the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music from 1947 to 1956, before returning to the UK.

On top of this, Goossens found time to compose 2 operas, a ballet and incidental music for the theatre, orchestral works including a concerto and 2 symphonies, chamber music and pieces for piano and for harp, all perceived today as in the romantic tradition. The one hundred or so rousing bars of Vieille Chanson a Boire or 'Old Drinking Song' are permeated with a simple rising motif which under lies its jollity. There is a middle section of thirty-four bars, in tenor clef, where the prevailing key of Bb Major gives way to B Major before the first tune returns in the original key (as a chorus) and the piece ends in a ten bar coda.
