ON THIS BRIGHT MORNING (score & parts)

On this Bright Morning was written for a consortium of high school bands from Montana. The focus group was the second band from Hellgate High School in Missoula, and it was assumed that this second band would represent the technical development of the average high school band in the state in a good music program.

The music is bright and engaging and at the same time very soulful. It requires players and conductors to fully engage with a very direct and strong personal feeling. As motivation for approaching the piece, I have included the following quote from an interview with the poet Jane Kenyon:

"Yes, there are things in this life that we have to endure that are almost unbearable, and yet I feel that there is a great goodness. Why is there something where nothing could have been? How is it that there is love, goodness and beauty when nothing could have been?"
