Walmer in Kent, England, is located by the English Channel, seven miles north of the Port of Dover and one mile south of Deal. It has a fine shingle (pebble) beach, excellent for year-round walking. It is also notable for its history (for example, it is thought to be the site of Julius Caesar's two landings in 55 & 54 BC); the quality of the light over the English Channel and the visibility of France on fine days. The composer resided in Walmer from 2015-2017, and wrote this piece some years later.

On Walmer Beach consists of three miniatures, each of about 1'20 in length. It is a modular piece, meaning that performers can either play through from start to finish, or just select one or two parts of it.

Alternative versions for cor anglais & bassoon, alto & baritone saxes and oboe/tenor recorder & guitar are also available.
  • Water's Edge I
  • Aubade - Interlude
  • Water's Edge II
