Cornelis Dopper (1870-1939) was a composer, conductor and music teacher who had studied piano and violin at the Conservatoire of Leipzig (1888-1890). One of his teachers was Carl Reinecke. In 1908 Dopper was nominated as second conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Mengelberg and stayed with the orchestra for 23 years, until his retirement in 1931. Due to his contribution to Dutch music his name is on the balcony of the Concertgebouw amongst the great composers of his time.
Dopper composed over a hundred works: symphonies, symphonic poems, choir music, chamber music and school music. Only a few works were published. Dopper had a great love for Dutch folk songs, Dutch culture and the Dutch landscape, all of which were an inspiration for his compositions, hence making him the most Dutch of the Dutch composers. Titles of his symphonies confirm this: the Rembrandt symphony, the Amsterdam symphony and the Southern Sea symphony.
In 1909 Dopper composed Oudt Liedeken (old song) on a poem by the Dutch poet Jules Schurmann (1873-1927). The song, originally composed for mezzo soprano and piano, is a romantic love song that fits seamlessly in the romantic era of the early twentieth century.
