PETER AND THE WOLF

Prokofiev wrote 'Peter and the Wolf' in 1936 and is one of his most frequently performed works, and, indeed, in the entire classical repertoire.. The story centres around Peter, who, defying his grandfather’s words of warning, defeats and captures a hungry wolf, with the help of a few animal friends. Each character has its own theme. In this version Peter’s theme is shared amongst the players, whilst the other characters are portrayed by individual instruments: the bird is played by a flute; the duck by an oboe; the cat by a clarinet; the grandfather by a bassoon; the wolf by a horn (backed up by the clarinet and bassoon); and the hunters are portrayed by timpani (or piano if not playing with the optional percussion).

Note: the percussion part is optional. If it is included then a drum kit is required (snare and bass drums) with woodblock, triangle, suspended cymbal, tambourine and triangle mounted on the kit. Also needed are 2-3 timpani. The narrator reads from the score and is not one of the players.
