Ned Rorem has composed over five hundred 'art songs', ten operas, three symphonies, four piano concertos and numerous orchestral and chamber works including concertos for flute and cor anglais. He is also the author of sixteen books, five of which are his diaries covering some eighty years. The basis of his musical composition has been chromatically tonal throughout his career and he has not held back from criticising the doctrines of the avant garde in his acerbic prose. Of his own music, Rorem says "....Why do I write music? Because I want to hear it - ... Others may have more talent, more sense of duty. But I compose just from necessity, and no one else is making what I need."
"Picnic on the Marne" is a collection of seven waltzes which were inspired by Rorem's visit to a south eastern suburb of Paris on 30th June 1956, and were published some 28 years later. They were first performed by John Harle, accompanied by John Lenehan at the piano, in February 1984 at Carnegie Hall, New York.
