The Welsh-born composer, pianist and entertainer Alec Templeton was a remarkable person. Although blind from birth he studied piano and composition at the Royal College of Music in London and became a most accomplished pianist. He was best remembered by his contemporaries as a great humorist and composed many 'novelties for the BBC during the 1930s. He later moved to the USA and became an American citizen, and it was there that he made his name and his fortune. One of his favourite games was to invite an audience to name any composer; he would then play a well-known tune in the style of that composer. This trick was probably the origin of his tongue-in-cheek compositions 'Mendelssohn Mows 'em Down', 'Scarlatti Stoops to Conga' and his best-remembered piano piece 'Bach Goes to Town'.

The Pocket-Size Sonata No.2 has a copyright date of 1959, three to four years before the composer's death from an unspecified illness. There's no inkling of that in the music which is good natured and light hearted throughout with a strong sense of swing. The first movement - Moderato (and Mellow) - has a gently bluesy feel to it but also a sense of movement which comes from the dominant triplet rhythm. The Menuetto in 3/4 time starts as a typical minuet but syncopation starts to creep in as early as bar 4 and swing undermines the strict minuet tempo for the rest of the movement; and the last movement in 4/4 (Allegretto) brings the sonata to a cheerful close in undisguised swing.

  • Menuetto: Andante gone moto
  • Allegretto: Quasi cool
