Although he had written thirteen symphonies by the time he was eleven, John McCabe's compositions were overshadowed by his career as a pianist until the early 1990's with the successes of his piano work 'Tenebrae', his fourth mature symphony and his third ballet 'Edward II'. Included within the handful of McCabe's works for wind are his 'Portraits' of 1981 which were published as part of a series edited by Richard Rodney Bennett who introduced them by writing "The gap between starting to learn an instrument and playing 'real' music is a very great deterrent to many players. ....... We are producing a series of pieces for many different instruments, playable by musicians with limited technical ability." Each of these 7 pieces is a character study or 'portrait' of some musical style.

  • 2. Threes and Twos - The title of this piece emphasizes its rhythmic nature.
  • 3. Guitar Song - The tune and harmonies are derived from the sound of guitar chords.
  • 4. Blues - Self-explanatory.
  • 5. Vocalise - A pastiche of one of Rachmaninov's best known and much loved tunes.
  • 6. March of the Fool - Like a 'Patrol' where the march emerges from the distance and then recedes, with a reference to Holst's opera 'The Perfect Fool'.
  • 7. Scherzo - A tribute to this type of composition, intended as a rousing finish to the collection.
