"Composed 1996 for the American Horn Quartet- Composers like Brahms and Schumann as well as the neo-classicists such as Paul Hindemith have often described their work as music for music's sake. And this is what the fourth quartet is all about. Having no story or picture, neither poem nor program, each movement has a simple theme which is always developed, albeit loosely from the principal theme. This work spans the technical and emotional elements of Turner's compositional craft, and indeed of the horn quartet itself. Quartet Nr. 4 was written in the Fall of 1996. The huge success of my third quartet was such that I really did not know where to go from there. I had been performing with the American Horn Quartet since 1985, and I believed I knew each of their individual playing styles, strengths and weaknesses pretty well. I had decided to really explore all the possibilities of the horn quartet as a chamber music ensemble, one which could be comparable to the string quartet. In order to do this, I needed to dive deep into the technical craft of composing. That is why I chose two very simple themes as the main ones to the first movement. I wanted to fully exploit the development possibilities; musically yes, but more so the technical side of four virtuoso horn players with a grand history of playing together. Keeping in mind that my major works for the AHQ often come at the end of a full length recital, I knew that I would have to add a wide variety of special effects and percussion sounds to help change up the horn quartet sound a bit. So the work is replete with special effects. Some of these effects are listed here: Stopped to open horn in quick succession Tapping rhythms on the bell Stopped and stopped flutter tonguing Singing and playing at the same time (multiphonics) in movement 3 Glissandos from a high note down to a low one Blowing air through the horn to sound like wind and of course, constant use of stopped and mutes to change colours It is important to recognize the intricate interplay between the four voices. In none of my other quartets is this element so important. Each of the four voices is completely dependent on each other. One part, for instance horn 1, would sound incomplete and even a bit silly without the other voices. The ensemble should play and move as one organism. In short, do exactly what the American Horn Quartet does so well." - Kerry Turner
