Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's first significant composition, a Te Deum, was composed in 1890 which was the year he joined the Royal College of Music (RCM). After five years of studying composition with C.V. Stanford, he left the RCM to work as a freelance musician and composer in which he was greatly helped by A.J.Jaeger of the music publishers Novello. Jaeger made his music known to Elgar which led to Coleridge-Taylor's first commissioned compositions. At the same time his old teacher Stanford was promoting his music at home and abroad, notably in Berlin where Stanford, so impressed by the F sharp minor Quintet, arranged for its performance by the Joachim Quartet from the parts he had brought with him.

The Op.10 Clarinet Quintet was composed between March and July 1895 while Coleridge-Taylor was still a student at the RCM. It was written in response to a remark, possibly by Stanford, after a performance of Brahms' Clarinet Quintet that "no modern composer could now write for this combination, without betraying the influence of Brahms". Stanford's admiration of the work suggests that it disproves the remark.

This is the piano reduction of the string parts of the Op.10 Quintet in F sharp minor (which has also been published in a new, corrected edition - E643).

This is a really lovely piece of music and it works well for clarinet and piano. The piano arrangement is pretty good, though slightly awkward in places. This edition is rather hard to read, lacking some 'courtesy' accidentals which would have been useful, and printed a little on the small side. All the same, recommended.
