Born in Calcutta to Anglo-Indian parents, John Mayer was having violin lessons at the Calcutta School of Music at the age of seven. He set his heart on composing by combining the European and Indian traditions in his work, but it was his violin playing which won him a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London where he arrived in 1950. Mayer found work as a rank & file violinist in the London Philharmonic Orchestra where Sir Charles Groves commissioned his Dance Suite for sitar, flute, tabla, tambura and symphony orchestra. It was premiered in 1958 by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, by which time Mayer had joined the Royal Philharmonic at Sir Thomas Beecham's invitation, where he happily spent the next seven years. In 1965 he was able to give up playing the violin professionally and concentrate on composing, particularly combinations of classical Indian forms and jazz, the public ear for which arose from a request from EMI for a piece to complete an album. Via his own album 'Indo-Jazz Fusions', Mayer began to move into progressive rock and, following the death of the alto-saxophonist and co-founder of the Indo-Jazz Fusions band, Joe Harriott in 1973, he turned more to composition and academic pursuits. He died in 2004 as a result of being hit by a car.
A 'Raga' is a melodic mode (similar to a scale) of 5 to 9 notes, used to form a melody in Indian classical music....."A tonal framework for composition and improvisation". Ragas are often associated with the seasons and times of the day.
