Hietsuki-bushi rhapsody was originally written for French horn player Mr Takeshi Hidaki as a part of a Japanese folk medley. I chose this particular song to be included for it is one of the most popular songs among locals in Miyazaki prefecture, where his home town is. We took the Hietsuki-bushi part out later and completed it as a piece.
Hietsuki-bushi is a working song for threshing Japanese millet with a wooden mortar in late autumn/fall, taking place in Shiba village, Miyazaki. In the early Showa era they modified its lyric to tragic love stories quoted from ancient literature and widely broadcasted on radio and records to attract tourists. Their plan was very successful and the song became nationally known.
Hietsuki-bushi Rhapsody is inspired by the heart-breaking love story between Princess Tsurutomi from the noble fugitive Heike family, and young warrior Daihachiro Nasu from the opposing family, Genji. The French horn sings Hietsuki-bushi over a Dm-G sequence, which wears a somewhat hard-boiled school connotation. The music changes to F major, describing the happiness of love between Daihachiro and Princess Tsurutomi, and how fate had to tear them apart.
