"Songs Without Words" (Lieder ohne Werte) seems to have been Mendelssohn's own title for the 8 volumes, each of 6 short lyrical piano pieces which he composed between 1842 and 1845. The 'songs' are untitled except for tempo markings, and when a friend asked to set words to them, the composer objected by saying "What the music I love expresses to me, is not thought too indefinite to put into words, but on the contrary, too definite." With a clear and often strong melodic line, these pieces lend themselves well to transcription for accompanied solo instruments and David Walter has transcribed most of them for oboe and piano into 6 volumes, published by Gerard Billaudot.

In his general introduction to the series, Mr Walter describes Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words as " .... so many little gems, miniature miracles of inventiveness and sensibility." and goes on to say "This collection aims at enriching the relatively poor Romantic repertoire for oboe. Yet it is not meant for seasoned performers only and several pieces may be tackled after 3 or 4 years of oboe study."

Volume 6 contains 4 songs from Op.85 (originally published as Book VII) and 5 from Op.102 (originally Book VIII and with Book VII, published shortly after Mendelssohn died). See Contents.
