Having spent ten years teaching the piano at the Paris Schola Cantorum, Grovlez began his conducting career at the Opera-Comique in 1905 and progressed via appointments to orchestras in Lisbon and Chicago before taking the rostrum of the Paris Opera in 1914. There he stayed until 1933 when he returned to teaching as Professor of Chamber Music at the Paris Conservatoire in 1939. Two years before he had started to write as a critic for 'L'Art Musical' and, on top of all this, he found the time to compose. It has been suggested that Grovlez involved himself in music too widely to make his mark as a composer but his operas and ballets were well received and he also produced symphonic works, piano pieces, some fifty songs and several pieces for wind and piano.
The Sarabande and Allegro of 1929 are tuneful and strongly contrasted. The stately but slightly wistful 3/4 time of the Sarabande in D minor comes to rest at a pause on a double barline and then the music sets off in a joyful D Major.
