Phyllis Tate was born in Buckinghamshire on 6th April 1911. She studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Harry Farjeon (1928-1932) with piano and timpani as secondary studies. Several of her works, including an opera, were performed while she was at the Academy, but her first public performance was the Cello Concerto in 1934 in Bournemouth.
In 1947 her Nocturne for four voices was the first broadcast by the BBC in its new Third Programme. In the same year the Sonata for clarinet and cello was performed at the London Contemporary Music Centre and again at the ISCM Festival in Salzburg in 1952. Her Concerto for Saxophone was given its first performance by the Hall' orchestra in 1948 and Songs of Sundry Natures at the LCMC in 1951.
She delighted in unusual chamber ensembles and excelled in solving their inherent musical problems. From 1976-1981 she was on the management committee of the Performing Rights Society membership fund, the first woman to be appointe
