SCHERZETTO

Between 1947 and 1969 Malcolm Arnold wrote the music for over one hundred feature films and documentaries including the comedy "You Know What Sailors Are" which was released in 1954 and starred Donald Sinden, Michael Horden and Dora Bryan. The soundtrack includes an entertaining little piece, played at the composer's request, by the great clarinettist Jack Thurston. This same tune, with piano accompaniment, reappeared in October 2001 at a concert in Norwich, organized by Paul Harris to celebrate Malcolm Arnold's 80th birthday, with Jonathan Howse as clarinet soloist. That arrangement was published the same year and has been described as typical of the composer's art...":engaging tunes, humour, a slightly reflective middle eight.... - all in the space of about two and a half minutes".
