From 1775 at the latest, Gennaro Rava was employed as oboist in the orchestra of the 'Teatro di San Carlo' in Naples where he also taught oboe and flute at one of the city's leading conservatoires. He wrote extensively for the flute, solo and in ensemble as well as dance music and the fact that much of his music was published in Paris suggests that he had an international as well as a local following.

No composition date is given for the three concertos, published here for the first time. The manuscript scores and parts are held in the 'Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando' in Madrid where they arrived under unusual circumstances. In December 1778, during the American War of Independence, the British 26 gun privateer frigate 'Westmorland' set sail from Livorno for home with a cargo including 57 crates of 'objets d'art', books and music collected by various young English gentlemen on their 'Grand Tours'. Amongst them were the scores and parts of these 3 concertos. The Westmorland encountered 4 French warships which she was unable to outrun and so surrendered and was taken into the Spanish port of Malaga. There the cargo was sold and remained until 1783 when it was acquired by King Carlos III of Spain from whom the bulk of the collection, including the music for Rava's flute concertos, found its way to the 'Real Academia'.

As for the music, the editor found "... no particular interpretative problems" in the manuscripts, and leaves it to speak for itself.
