Sequences by ?ESMAE flute students: João Ferreira, Sofia Rego, Diana Mortágua, Catarina Santos, Mafalda Carvalho, Tiago Silva and Marisa Correia. Compiled and reviewed by Raquel Lima

"This book is a direct result of my experience as a professor at the Escola Superior de Música do Instituto Politécnico do Porto (ESMAE), Portugal. Each year I ask my students to compose a musical etude or 'sequence' exploring their personal technical difficulties. The most impressive of these 'sequences' I have formed into the following compilation. The present edition, which includes 7 sequences, is taken from the academic year of 2009/2010. The pieces cover a wide range of techniques in flute playing: flexibility and quality of sound, legato, phrasing, expression, intervals, intonation, articulation, referring to all different registers of the instrument." - Raquel Lima (Flute Teacher at Escola Superior de Música do Instituto Politécnico do Porto

"Sequences are an important part of our technique practice, developing our sense of keys and harmonies, and being productive and fun at the same time. Scales are the most well known sequences, but it is often more enjoyable to play a passage that is more melodic and easier on the ear. This book is a collaboration of ideas from the students of Anna Raquel Lime, and provides an excellent selection of sequences to explore all the keys and push your technique. When you become familiar with these patterns, experiment by writing some of your own and you will soon hear the benefit to your technique development." - Clare Southworth
