The clarinettist and composer Paul Dzon (Maastricht, 1957) studied clarinet with Bert van den Akker and HaFa-conducting with Martin Koekelkoren at the Maastricht Conservatoire. This resulted in the following diplomas: Clarinet Teaching in 1979, HaFa-Conducting in 1980 and Performing Musician in 1981. During his studies the experience he gained working with the Hungarian-Romanian ensemble ‘Haira’ stood him good stead for his later arrangements and compositions.
Paul has played with The Royal Marine Corps Band in Rotterdam since 1980. He is one of the four permanent woodwind players in the Egerländer company ‘Herman Engelbertink und sein Egerländer Musikanten’.
Since 1987 Paul Dzon has arranged and composed for, amongst others, wind band, brass band, clarinet quartet, saxophone quartet and mallet band. His works for wind orchestra include Kolo, Caçak, Hora and Saxomania. For violin and wind band he has arranged Cîocalia, Zwei Gitarren and Valse Triste. Several of his compositions and arrangements have been recorded on cd by the Marine Corps Band. Many works have been published by Mansarda.
The Serenade was composed in 1994, a commission from a colleague in the Marine Corps Band. The original instrumentation was for 12 bass clarinets, but Paul later made arrangements for other ensembles.
In his own words: “I have a great passion for Balkan music and its irregular time signatures. Hence I found it a challenge to write a piece with irregular time signatures but not specifically in the Balkan idiom. I find it important that the musicians derive pleasure from playing the music while the listener can also experience enjoyable moments. It is music written for performers and listeners."
