SERENADE Op.10 No.1

Ivor Foster trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London and returned there to take up a professorship of harmony and composition. His own composing career flourished during the 1930's, '40's and '50's when he wrote a number of light instrumental works, mostly for the piano. Foster did venture into into composition for winds with his 'Two Pieces' for flute & piano, 'Evening Song' for clarinet & piano and 'Sonatina' for oboe, all composed during the 1960's and 70's.

The 'Two Simple Pieces' for bassoon and piano, of which 'Serenade' is the first, were published in 1930 and remain popular. The fifty-six bars of Serenade, in 3/4 time, are in ternary form (ABA) with A - sprightly and dancelike and B - legato, spanning over two rising octaves in twelve bars.
