An unwilling student of the piano, the twelve year old Paul Lewis decided to become a composer when he saw Laurence Olivier in the film of Shakespeare's 'Richard III' and heard William Walton's soundtrack. He left school at fifteen and, deliberately avoiding any formal musical training, joined the music publishing business. At twenty Paul Lewis scored his first television soundtrack for ABC's 'Armchair Theatre' and in the succeeding fifty years he has composed more than one hundred and fifty TV series and single programmes encompassing drama of all types, comedy (Monty Python), children's series (The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe), wildlife and other documentaries, animation and commercials. In addition to all that, he has a catalogue of over eighty published concert works which are "...., always ebulliently optimistic and unashamedly romantic, ....".

The Sérénade populaire, said to have been written originally for mouth organ, is in five distinct sections. The first 16 bars are marked Andante espressivo, in a gentle 3/4 which accelerates through bar 17 to Allegretto. This continues for some 30 bars in a staccato quaver dance until, reappearing at bar 49, 'Tempo 1' returns for a further 15 bars. This is brought to an end by the Allegro spiritoso at bar 65 which takes us via several changes in time signature to the 8 bar coda marked Allegro molto. The form is broadly that of a rondo and the mood is reminiscent of the circus.
