Willy Hess was born, brought up and educated in the northern Swiss town of Winterthur. He studied nearby at the Zurich Conservatory which later became the Zurich University of the Arts and went on to teach piano, counterpoint and composition. Hess's main claim to fame was as a Beethoven scholar and the publication of his catalogue of Beethoven's works which are omitted from the 'complete' edition. He played bassoon in the Winterthur Stadtorchester from 1942 to 1971.

Besides his '3 Ländler, Op.28' for four hand piano duet, and a sonata for the unusual if not unique combination of viola and bassoon, Hess wrote '7 Recital Pieces' in two volumes for bassoon and piano and a version for clarinet and piano. The date of composition is not stated but Volume II of the bassoon version has the copyright date of 1961 and contains the last three of the seven pieces. Most of the one hundred and fifteen bars of 'Reigen' are in 3/8 and the piece is built around a four semi-quaver motif which ends in a rising octave, sometimes a ninth. There is a lilting 6/8 Trio for twenty bars in the middle. The second piece 'Lied' (eighty-six bars of 2/4) seems to have been taken from the composer's Op.58 song 'Mühlenmärchen'. The last of the three - 'Deutscher Tanz' (German Dance) returns to 6/8 but this time in rollicking 'rusticano' style as a finale.

  • 6 Lied - Andante con moto
  • 7 Deutscher Tanz - Allegro moderato e rusticano
