Gaubert's early success as a conductor in Paris was overtaken by his activities as a flautist and composer and he became a soloist in the principal Paris orchestras. In 1919 he was professor of the flute class at the Paris Conservatoire and from that time, Gaubert re-established himself as a conductor, concentrating on new works and the Wagnerian repertory at the Paris Op''ra.
The transcription of his Sicilienne for flute and piano was published in 1914. Typical of the form, it is in 6/8 and in a minor key - D in this case. The first 23 bars are built around a motif which rises and falls on the 6 quavers of each bar and imparts something of a wistful air. The introduction of a rhythm dot on the first quaver of several bars after the 'Plus vite' reinforces the liveliness of this 32 bar section until the original motif returns at the 'a Tempo' to bring the piece to a thoughtful close. Charming salon music with a sense of 'fin de siecle'.
