Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (26 October 1685 – 23 July 1757) was an Italian composer who spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. In his lifetime he wrote 555 keyboard sonatas as single movements, mostly in binary form, and some in early sonata form, and mostly written for the harpsichord or the earliest pianofortes. He is classified primarily as a Baroque composer chronologically, although his music was influential in the development of the Classical style and he was one of the few Baroque composers to transition into the classical period. (From Wikipedia)
Whilst a student at the Royal Academy of Music in London back in the 1970s I was introduced to some of these keyboard sonatas as part of my second study piano lessons and immediately realised just how well they could be adapted to the clarinet. As a result I arranged six of them for two clarinets and bass clarinet and have performed them on several occasions since. After I left London they remained largely forgotten until, forty years later, they resurfaced in a pile of old manuscript. I’ve finally managed to transfer them onto computer, reworked in places, and now offer as a publication for other clarinettists to enjoy.
I say enjoy because they really are fun to play, challenging in places, but very rewarding.
