SOLITAIRE

Despite being acknowledged as one of the finest trumpeters of his day, Malcolm Arnold gave up the principal trumpet seat with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 27 to become a full time composer. Over the next forty years he wrote no less than 132 film scores including the music for 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' for which he won an Oscar in 1958, one of the first British composers to do so. But there was much 'serious' music as well - 20 concertos; string quartets; 2 operas; 9 symphonies, which are thought to be the most personal music Arnold wrote, and 7 ballets including the one act piece 'Solitaire' of 1956.

However, this short piece with the same title was published for the first time in 2003 and seems to be quite different to the ballet score. Its 50 bars in 3/4 time are reflective, even nostalgic but there are glimpses of Malcolm Arnold's sense of humour.
